Converting Nondeterministic Automata and Context-Free Grammars into Parikh Equivalent Deterministic Automata

چکیده
We investigate the conversion of nondeterministic finite automata and context-free grammars into Parikh equivalent deterministic finite automata, from a descriptional complexity point of view. We prove that for each nondeterministic automaton with n states there exists a Parikh equivalent deterministic automaton with e √ n·lnn) states. Furthermore, this cost is tight. In contrast, if all the strings accepted by the given automaton contain at least two different letters, then a Parikh equivalent deterministic automaton with a polynomial number of states can be found. Concerning context-free grammars, we prove that for each grammar in Chomsky normal form with n variables there exists a Parikh equivalent deterministic automaton with 2 ) states. Even this bound is tight.

Converting Nondeterministic Automata and Context-Free Grammars into Parikh Equivalent One-Way and Two-Way Deterministic Automata
We investigate the conversion of one-way nondeterministic finite automata and context-free grammars into Parikh equivalent oneway and two-way deterministic finite automata, from a descriptional complexity point of view. We prove that for each one-way nondeterministic automaton with n states there exist Parikh equivalent one-way and two-way deterministic automata with e √ n·lnn) and p(n) states,...
متن کاملComplexity of Problems for Commutative Grammars
We consider Parikh images of languages accepted by non-deterministic finite automata and context-free grammars; in other words, we treat the languages in a commutative way — we do not care about the order of letters in the accepted word, but rather how many times each one of them appears. In most cases we assume that the alphabet is of fixed size. We show tight complexity bounds for problems li...
متن کاملUnary Context-Free Grammars and Pushdown Automata, Descriptional Complexity and Auxiliary Space Lower Bounds
It is well known that a context-free language defined over a one-letter alphabet is regular. This implies that unary context-free grammars and unary pushdown automata can be transformed into equivalent finite automata. In this paper, we study these transformations from a descriptional complexity point of view. In particular, we give optimal upper bounds for the number of states of nondeterminis...
متن کاملParikh Image of Pushdown Automata
We compare pushdown automata (PDAs for short) against other representations. First, we show that there is a family of PDAs over a unary alphabet with n states and p ≥ 2n + 4 stack symbols that accepts one single long word for which every equivalent contextfree grammar needs Ω(n(p− 2n− 4)) variables. This family shows that the classical algorithm for converting a PDA to an equivalent contextfree...
متن کاملOn the Capabilities of Grammars, Automata, and Transducers Controlled by Monoids
During the last decades, classical models in language theory have been extended by control mechanisms defined by monoids. We study which monoids cause the extensions of context-free grammars, finite automata, or finite state transducers to exceed the capacity of the original model. Furthermore, we investigate when, in the extended automata model, the nondeterministic variant differs from the de...
